Empowering children on ice

North End

Programs: North End · St. John's

HEROS works directly with the Winnipeg School District and in an effort to identify local schools in the geographic area(s) of greatest need where socio-economic factors such as poverty are an issue. In the case of Winnipeg this area is the North End.

The Winnipeg girls and boys have been selected from the following North End and inner city schools: Marymound, Nijimakwa, William Whyte, Samuel de Champlain and River Elm. Since 2009, HEROS has worked with over 108 girls and boys in the North End.

HEROS has partnered with Resiliency Initiatives Canada to collect data including socio-economic information and how the children were developing as a result of our programming.

Socio-economic data collected indicates the following:

Ratio of girls to boys: 21% (girls); 79% (boys) Identified as ethnic minority: 75% Of this number: 36% self identify as Aboriginal & 23% as Metis Living with one parent, another relative or someone else: 75%
