Hockey in the Harbour: First Annual Vancouver Chapter Gala Fundraising Dinner

September 19, 2018 was a night with a bit of everything: hockey, laughs, tears, comradery, pride and admiration for truly remarkable human beings. We are happy to announce the success of our First Annual Vancouver Chapter Gala Fundraising Dinner took place at The Pipe Shop at the Shipyards in North Vancouver. Thank you to everyone who took part!

The dinner was preceded by the second annual event for the youth in our Downtown Eastside HEROS chapter “Hockey in the Harbour”.  Last September we held the “Hockey on the Docks” event and brought participants from our Surrey chapter for a tour of the Fraser Surrey Docks facility. The tour gave the youth and their families a window into the economic importance of the port to our region and also an overview of the types of careers available in this sector. Our second annual event started with a boat tour of Burrard inlet highlighting industry on the waterfront and finishing at Shipbuilders Square with an afternoon of ball hockey and dinner. According to some of the volunteers there were more than a few attendees arriving for the Gala dinner who would have rather ditched the suit jacket or dress for a Jersey and hopped in to play with our HEROS too!

Harnaryan Singh took to the mic to provide live play-by-play commentary for the HEROS outside playing hockey and then continued on as our MC for this special evening. Delicious food provided by Edge Catering, a silent auction with items provided by our generous sponsors, socializing with friends and colleagues, live auction with more wonderful donations and heads or tails with auctioneer services provided by Howard Blank – it was truly an amazing evening. A special shout out goes to our keynote speaker Nick Wilson who was brave enough to stand in front of a room full of strangers and share his story. Nick is a shining example of what youth can accomplish with the help of great mentors and with this continued support HEROS can provide opportunities to more kids like Nick, helping them build a bright future.

As a result of amazing generosity, at this event we raised over $85,000.  All of us here at HEROS cannot begin to express how grateful we are to have such generous, big hearted supporters and donors. Thank you to everyone for making our first Hockey in the Harbour fundraiser an enormous success and for giving more children opportunities for personal growth through sport training, scholarships and educational development.

We’ll see you next year for our second annual Hockey in the Harbour event!
