New Haven Mortgage Corporation and the HEROS program share many core values. This is especially true when it comes to education, which is one of many reasons we at HEROS are excited for our newest partnership.
Earlier this year New Haven Mortgage Corporation, which is based in North York, ON, donated $10,000 for scholarships to the graduates of the HEROS Jane-Finch program in Toronto.
“It’s a great organization because it gives kids an opportunity to play hockey and those skills can benefit them in all areas of life,” said New Haven’s Vice President Arjun Saraf. “Our focus was about making sure the money goes to much needed places.”
According to Saraf, there is often a negative connotation attached to the Jane-Finch community due to peoples’ financial status and gang activity. While HEROS is not immune to the effects of gang violence, providing after-school programming and scholarships are important ways that HEROS is contributing to positive changes in communities like Jane-Finch
“HEROS provides structure for the kids in the community, keeps them exposed from the bad elements and gives kids a chance to play with their peers of the same age who are academically inclined,” Saraf said.
New Haven Mortgage Corporation is a private non-bank lender specializing in true equity lending, focusing on helping marginalized individuals gain access to home ownership through equitable mortgages, and providing individuals with greater opportunities. New Haven Mortgage Corporation discovered HEROS when the company was looking for opportunities to give back to the community in a meaningful way.
According to Saraf, one of the reasons the mortgage company selected HEROS was to honour one of New Haven’s founders, who passed away and was passionate about hockey. New Haven Mortgage Corporation also selected HEROS because the company noticed there were sponsors HEROS acquired who were notable and had great reputations.
“A charity like HEROS is inspiring,” Saraf said. “Hockey is a very expensive sport, lots of kids don’t have an opportunity to play due to a combination of factors.”
Saraf recalls what it was like visiting an on-ice session and meeting the Jane-Finch HEROS during their end of year party in May. One of the HEROS players shared with Saraf his career goal of working in digital marketing.
“Hearing him discuss how passionate he was and how much HEROS helped him really showcased HEROS’ focus,” Saraf said. “Being able to come down and see a HEROS on-ice session, it makes a difference. Seeing the young gentleman have a passion for his future and attributing that to the success of HEROS, you really can’t put it into words.”
Looking ahead to the future of the partnership, New Haven Mortgage Corporation “would love to give back” to HEROS in any capacity that they can, whether that be financially, donating their time to HEROS or in other ways.
We are tremendously thankful to New Haven Mortgage Corporation, which allows HEROS to provide our program in communities like Jane-Finch.
Thank you, New Haven Mortgage Corporation.
